Aboard ship, time was not read; it was rung. Through every four-hour watch, the bell marked each half hour: one ring for the first, a ring added with each turn of the glass, until eight bells closed the watch. “Eight bells and all’s well” meant the watch was done and the ship was sound. Its voice ordered life on board, and warned through fog when the world vanished into white.
Our Bronze Ship’s Bell keeps that voice within arm’s reach. Cast in heavy solid brass and finished by hand, it rings as clear and true today as it did on deck, a sound you feel as much as hear.
